“There was a time when there was a big gap between the level of American musicianship and that of the rest of the world. But all that has changed. Today you find excellent players everywhere. I really enjoyed this session – the trio has a great feeling for the music and a flair for interpreting it expressively. And they admire the same area of the jazz spectrum as I do. This is not the normal routine form of jazz – there are some really innovative elements. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!”
– Vincent Herring

“It was an inspired idea to unite the abundant and homologous talents of Vincent Herring and the Martin Sasse Trio – a fact to which this album bears eloquent testimony…
Jazz has often been described as “the art of surprise” and this album offers a number of unpredictable, unexpected moments which add great vitality to the music…
‘Close Encounter’, the product of the meeting of highly compatible musical minds, is a most satisfying album, full of well-conceived ideas, inspired solo work and artistic integrity.”
– Mike Hennessey

The Sasse-Herring link was forged in New York in the spring of 2001, when Martin played a session with Vincent at his regular Monday night gig at the Up Over Jazz Café in Brooklyn. And then later in October/November 2002, Vincent Herring and the Martin Sasse Trio went on the road for a short tour in Germany.

Vincent Herring has performed with jazz great as Lionel Hampton, Horace Silver, Larry Coryell, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Abdullah Ibrahim, Nat Adderley, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Cedar Walton and Phil Woods. He has made about a dozen albums under his own name, is featured on nine recordings by Nat Adderley and has done record dates with Roy Hargrove, John Hicks, Louis Hayes, the Mingus Big Band, Carl Allen, Donald Brown, Don Braden and Bernard Purdie.

The award-winning Martin Sasse has also kept some pretty distinguished company in the course of his career, including Peter Bernstein, Benny Bailey, Charlie Mariano, Toots Thielemans, Ferdinand Povel, Jeff Hamilton, Gary Campbell and the New York Voices.

The Sasse Trio has been together now for eight years and boasts a gratifyingly full date book and an impressive collection of enthusiastic press reviews.
