Recorded on November 3, 2003 at Nola Recording Studios, New York.
“Wayne warned me. Two years ago for a Jazz Times piece following the release of his auspicous debut as a leader, Times Change, he concluded the interview by stating: “This first record was basically, ‘Hi, I’m Wayne Escoffery.’ The next one is going to be, ‘You know who I am, so now I’m really gonna lay something on ya.”
Indeed, the powerful young tenorman has upped the ante on Intution, his sophomore release for Nagel Heyer. While displaying the same bold tone, angular lines and authoritative attack that marked his previous outing, Escoffery kicks it up a notch in the company of his forward-thinking colleagues Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Gerald Cannon on bass, Rick Germanson on piano and the irrepressible polyrhythmic dynamo Ralph Peterson on drums. Whereas, Times Change was a fine introduction to a promising new talent on the scene, Intuition documents the bristling chemistry of a working unit while following Escoffery on the next leg of his ongoing musical journey.
With this stellar second outing as a leader, Wayne makes an incremental leap from Times Change and he’s already moving on from there. It will be interesting to follow his progess as he continues to grow.” – Bill Milkowski
“The blowing is hot … the crew is right … a really fiery date.” – Jazz Thing
